Eli Tessler
If you look at snow flakes from a distance they all look the same. However, upon closer inspection you will see that every one is unique. Like snow flakes, people can look alike from a distance, but once you take a closer look you start to see the differences. People do many things differently, one of these things is learning.
There are many learning styles which people have, and when taught in those learning styles they learn better. Myers-Briggs is a system used to classify different personalities as well as learning styles. They are as follows: Answerer, Dancer, Relater and Debater.
1. The Answerer:
· Centers on facts details.
· Learns best in lecture structured assignments.
· Very organized.
2. The Dancer:
· Learns through actions, all senses.
· Trouble in public school.
· Centers on senses stimuli.
3. Debater:
· Thinking processes lessons.
· Needs to question, inquire, challenge.
· Good manipulator.
· Good researcher.
· Centers on abstractions and things.
4. Relater:
· Experiential/cooperative learning.
· Need personal connection.
· Discussion, composition.
· Centers on people and abstractions.
My name is Eli Tessler and I am a relater, and after learning that I was able to see my weaknesses and like others at Denver Academy, I turned them into strengths. For instance I once had trouble spelling; I went to a special teacher at Denver Academy who not only taught me how to spell certain words, but taught me tricks so I could spell almost any word.
My old school, like most schools focused on one learning style, the Answerer. Because I am not an Answerer I learned very few things, but what I did learn was how to read. And not from a normal teacher in a normal class, but a teacher who privately helped me, and taught me to love reading. I learned in my old school that I worked best one on one with my teacher. However in almost every class I did not do well, the normal lecture based classes did not help.
When I came to Denver Academy it took the teachers one quarter to get me motivated and ready to learn. If I had trouble in a class because how the teacher taught, the teacher would take the time to privately help me after school. What is so great about Denver Academy is that if one teacher’s style of teaching does not work for you, they will help you to understand the subject by working with you one-on-one.
So once I learned how I learn, it was easy to learn. To learn how to learn is the best way to learn other things. Teachers helped me with organization, planning and homework. And once I learned how to plan it was easier to learn.
Denver Academy also understands that different understanding is generational. It ties into learning because each generation learns differently. Denver Academy is able to supply each student and each generation with the learning they need. And better understand why they have certain needs.
I am a millennial, and even though there is no set definition of that word I do have my own definition. We are accepting, which is both a flaw and a blessing. We are good with technology, however if we keep having technological geniuses work on video games we wont get anywhere. It seems our priorities are a bit skewed.
I have come to these conclusions on Millennials by looking at past and present generations. For instance, I looked at my fathers view on gay rights and marriage, and it totally differs from mine. We have debates, where each side probes the other for weaknesses, and where both sides come out of the conversation a bit upset but unchanged.
But while we have our differences we also have our similarities. We still learn, we still play, as each generation grows the more we learn, and while we do stray a little from the path of our parents, we always stay in sight. So we can talk and learn. Each new generation learns previous ones, but they also refresh them as well.
So in the end, generation are different, while also being similar. And that is what Denver Academy does; they teach you how to understand and use these differences to learn your about your own. Which prepare you for the future.
